Tobias Lemke
Political Science Ph.D.
Welcome!
My name is Tobias Lemke and I am a Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science & International Relations at Washington College in Maryland. Born and raised in Germany, I’ve called the U.S. my home away from home since attending the University of Minnesota as an undergraduate in 2006. After working in juvenile corrections post-graduation, I moved to the east coast to start my career as a life-long student, teacher, and scholar.
I defended my dissertation at the University of Delaware in 2021, focusing on the rise of nationalist movements in 19th century European politics and their implications for understanding international politics and order today.

I am broadly trained in international relations and comparative politics with a regional focus on Western and Central Europe. However, I have also developed experience teaching and researching US American politics. Broadly, my research examines the intersection of elite and mass politics. I am specifically interested in understanding how political leaders use the language of national identity to gain and maintain state power. Most importantly, I am a passionate educator who strives to align their research with their teaching whenever possible.
Outside of work, I enjoy running, gardening, eating good cheese and reading all the cheesy and non-cheesy sci-fi I can get my hands on. Thank you for coming to my website and don't hesitate to reach out with questions! Oh .. and you should totally hire me!
